Francis Buchanan was commissioned by the British East India Company to travel through the region soon after the defeat of Mysore under Tipu Sultan. Lingaraj Jayaprakash is a researcher at the Sustainable Futures Lab at McGill University who works on environment and development has, along with Sashi Sivramkrishna and others, been revisiting places Buchanan has described, for the past fifteen years.
